Polymerization Shrinkage
Composites (white fillings) shrink just slightly upon their hardening. Usually, mature silver mercury fillings, or amalgams, are withdrawn and substituted with white fillings. Taking out fillings and not acknowledging the fractures (visually) may lead to problems. A fractured tooth must not get any white composite filling.
Other Issues
The two scenarios above are typical. Composite material works well if applied well. It might hold bubbles, fail to gel well, not cure entirely, etc. Composite is very technique sensitive and often gets inserted without enough acute care.
