Today, there are more teeth whitening kits and products on the market than one can even imagine. All of them promise to give you brighter, whiter teeth so you can, once again, be proud of your smile. Depending on the product, some work faster than others – if, that is, they actually work at all.
Here, we’re going to take a look at today’s teeth whitening kits and products and whether or not they are useful and safe. First off, however, let’s look at those teeth whitening products you see on the shelves of every drugstore and supermarket, and why your teeth might need to be whitened.
Tooth Stains – What Causes Them?
In the human body, the hardest substance that exists is your tooth enamel. Unfortunately, it’s vulnerable to staining and discoloration, despite its impressive strength. Either deep inside your tooth or on the surface of the enamel, discoloration can occur. Depending on the depth of the discoloration and the source of the stain, you may be able to achieve some good results from certain teeth whitening kits and products.

- Stains related to aging
- Deep stains
- Surface stains
Store-Bought Products – OTC Whitening Kits
Most over-the-counter teeth whitening kits and products are relatively safe and can offer good to moderate results – if you follow the instructions provided. In the best case scenario, you can experience 6 to 7 shades of whiter teeth in roughly 30 days (this depends on the product).
The best thing about these kits is that they’re convenient and easy to use. At any point you wish, you can start and/or stop using them. They can damage your tooth enamel, however, so they should not be overused.
Some types of stains, as well as caps and/or fillings, can’t be improved with bleaching agents. Fillings and caps, for example, when compared to your natural teeth, may end up being a different color due to uneven results provided by some OTC whitening kits.
Note: Regardless of how extraordinary an over-the-counter tooth whitening product or kit may be – even if it’s safe – nothing beats the results that can be achieved through professional teeth whitening procedures performed by a dentist.
